Did you know your favorite streaming platforms offered an incredible variety of international content?
Among the infinite possibilities, French shows have gained popularity, not only for their entertainment value (trust me, some of them are just THE BEST shows you can watch!). If you are learning French, their series provide a great way to enhance your listening skills while immersing yourself in French culture.
With authentic dialogues and cultural nuances, these shows offer a unique opportunity to sharpen language skills in a natural context. You'll be exposed to colloquial expressions, regional accents, and cultural references that we may not have time to go through during our one to one sessions!
I'll write another article soon to tell you how to maximize learning while watching French shows, but right now it's time for entertainment, here's my recommandation for the 10 best French Netflix shows !
Top 10 French Shows to Watch
1. **Call My Agent!** ('10 Pour cent' en français) (Comedy) - Set in a Parisian talent agency, this witty comedy delves into the professional and personal lives of agents striving to keep their clients happy. And those clients aren't just random : all the actors in the series play their own role ! Such a great way for you to dive into French culture !
You'll find a rich variety of colloquial expressions and lifestyle references, as well as a good sense of what French people find funny. The shows is definitely my personal favorite !
2. **The 7 lives of Lea** (Les 7 vies de Lea) : An intriguing series mixing mystery and time travel, where a teenager relives the days leading up to a crime from different perspectives. It's a mini series, perfect if you don't feel like starting a multi-season. The acting is great, worth watching for sure !
3. **Lupin** (Thriller/Drama) - This captivating series follows Assane Diop, a gentleman thief inspired by the classic character Arsène Lupin. To be honest I haven't watched this one (yet?). I love Omar Si (the main actor), but for a reason I can't get myself to watch it .... If you do please email me and let me know you thoughts about it, you might convince me to add it to my watch list !
4. **Marseille** (Drama) - This political drama centers around the power struggle in the city of Marseille, featuring fierce rivalries and deep corruption. Completely different from the previous shows, it gives a good insight into 'real France'.
5. **The Hook Up Plan** (Plan Coeur) (Romantic Comedy) - So much fun ! This light-hearted series follows a group of friends navigating love and relationships in Paris. With its relatable themes and humorous twists, you'll be immersed in authentic conversational French and will soon get attached to this group of friends. Another of my personal favorite !
6. **The Parisian Agency** (L'Agence) (Reality TV) - Are you a fan of real Estate ? Do you love stopping by real estate agency to have a look at what's available (and for how much!) in every new town you visit ? You will love watch L'agence ! This reality series follow the Kretz family and their luxury property business as they help clients buy and sell fabulous homes in France and abroad.
7. **Family Business** (Comedy) - This irreverent comedy showcases a family trying to turn their butcher shop into a marijuana café. With its humorous take on societal norms and family dynamics, it offers learners lively dialogues and slang that are prevalent in everyday interactions.
8. **Mortel** A supernatural series where teenagers gain mysterious powers after making a pact with a dark entity. Great watch to discover what life in suburban Paris looks like (you'll be surprised !)
9. **The Forest** (La Forêt) (Crime Thriller) : In a small village near the Ardennes forest, a teenage girl mysteriously disappears, leading to a gripping investigation. As secrets unravel, the dark past of the community comes to light, keeping viewers on edge until the very end.
5. **The Outreau Case - A French nightmare** (l'Affaire d'Outreau) (Documentary) - this mini series revisits the meanders of THE tragic affair of child abuse and judicial disaster. One of the biggest scandals in French history, not the funniest program to watch but definitely an important part of French culture you'd like to know about.
