How to Date in France Without Cultural Faux Pas

How do you flirt and meet people when you are a foreigner in France?

This week, I read a touching message on a Facebook group for expats. A 32-year-old man, newly divorced, was expressing his complete confusion. In his home country, he was very confident and comfortable with women. However, since arriving in France, he faced a complete mental block. Despite his excellent level of French, he no longer understood the rules of attraction. Reading his words, I felt a deep wave of empathy. It is true that dating culture changes dramatically from one country to another. When you lack these crucial cultural keys, you can quickly feel lost and miss out on wonderful connections.

Forget the "Resume" Pitch: French Flirting Is Subtle

In many English-speaking countries, people like to put themselves forward when flirting. People often list their professional achievements or extraordinary projects, almost as if they were in a job interview! In France, this direct approach does not work at all. If you talk too much about your success or your money, people will find you pretentious—meaning arrogant and boastful.

French people strongly prefer subtlety. To charm someone, it is better to rely on humor, general knowledge, or shared passions. For example, instead of talking about your job promotions, tell a story about your last train trip or share your opinion on a great local restaurant. The main goal is to create a genuine connection. Above all, you must show that you know how to listen with sincerity and curiosity.

Unwritten Rules for a First Date in France

The concept of a highly structured and formal "date" is not part of our culture. Forget about a fancy, expensive, and stiff dinner for a first meeting. We prefer inviting someone for a coffee in the afternoon or a drink on a terrace for l'apéro (after-work drinks). This environment is much less stressful for getting to know someone in a relaxed way.

How should you greet someone when you meet up? Absolutely avoid the American-style hug, which feels awkward to us! Usually, we simply do a quick bise (cheek kiss) to say hello, even when meeting for the very first time.

Another common question involves paying the check at the end of the date. Often, the person who made the invitation offers to pay. However, it is polite to offer to split the bill. If your date insists on paying for the drinks, accept with a smile and offer to pay next time!

The Exclusivity Question and the First Kiss

In the United States, couples often have a big conversation to define the relationship and ask if they are exclusive. In France, this conversation almost never happens! We like to keep things slightly ambiguous at the beginning of a romance.

Yet, our golden rule is simple: the first kiss usually marks the official start of the relationship. Unless clearly stated otherwise, if you kiss on the lips, it automatically implies that you are an exclusive couple. You do not need to sign a moral contract or ask complicated questions.

Let me share a fun personal story. I have been with my husband Jimmy for over 17 years. Our first kiss did not happen under the romantic Eiffel Tower. We were at the Braderie de Lille (a giant street market) with a few friends. The atmosphere was festive with beer and French fries. We walked away from the group and shared our first kiss in a supermarket parking lot! It was not glamorous on paper. However, that night, it became obvious: we were together.

Where to Meet Singles Today

Even though dating apps like Tinder or Bumble are very popular, French people love meeting naturally. Here are a few great ideas for meeting singles and socializing:

• Parties with friends: Informal apéros hosted by your acquaintances are ideal. You meet "friends of friends" in a safe and comfortable setting.

• Modern sports clubs: Bouldering gyms and running clubs are extremely popular right now. They offer a great way to break the ice over a shared workout.

• Cultural activities: Joining cooking workshops or theater classes helps you find people who naturally share your interests.
  
  

Essential French Dating Vocabulary

To help you feel completely comfortable, here are a few essential words and expressions to keep in mind:

Un rencard /ihn rahn-kar/

• Meaning: A casual, everyday word for a romantic date.

• Usage: Use this in informal conversations with friends (e.g., « J'ai un rencard ce soir » / "I have a date tonight").

Draguer /dra-gé/

• Meaning: To flirt with or try to charm someone using words, humor, or glances.

• Usage: Very common in daily French. Another common alternative is flirter.
  
  

Se prendre un râteau / suh prahndr ihn ra-to/

• Meaning: To get turned down or rejected by someone you were trying to charm.

• Literal meaning: "To step on a rake" (and have the handle hit you in the face). It describes the sudden shock of a blunt rejection!

• Meaning: The chemistry is great, or conversation flows easily right from the start.

• Usage: A very positive way to describe a first meeting (e.g., « Le courant est bien passé » / "We really hit it off").

• Meaning: To have a crush on someone or feel a strong attraction.

• Context: Can be used for people, places, or objects you instantly love.

• Meaning: To experience love at first sight.

• Literal meaning: "To get hit by a lightning bolt." It implies an immediate, intense, and passionate attraction.
